Governor Nasir Idris Unveils Plans to Bring Back Teachers Training Colleges

Kebbi State to take bold measures in a bid to address the declining quality of education in public primary schools nationwide, Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has revealed plans to reintroduce Teachers’ Training Colleges in the state.

Governor Idris made this announcement during a training workshop for 1,200 primary school teachers at the Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic in Birnin-Kebbi on Tuesday.

Citing the scrapping of teachers’ colleges across the country as a detrimental move, Governor Idris emphasized the importance of these institutions in equipping educators with the necessary skills to enhance teaching and learning methodologies.

He expressed his commitment to revitalizing the education sector through infrastructure development, teacher training, improved welfare, provision of furniture, and instructional materials, and creating conducive learning environments.

Governor Nasir Idris pledged to establish two teachers’ colleges initially, catering to both male and female educators. He recognized the pivotal role of education in societal development and vowed to reverse the poor examination results recorded by students in the state.

Governor Nasir Idris Vows Cash Reward of N30,000

During the workshop, the governor announced his contribution of thirty thousand naira to each attending teacher, totaling N36 million. He commended the Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic for its academic excellence and shared his own experience as a former student of the institution.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Usman Sani Tunga, disclosed that the training workshop was sponsored by the state government and organized by the Polytechnic’s consultancy services. The workshop, held simultaneously in six centers across the state, covers subjects such as English, Mathematics, Methodology, and others, guided by professional resource persons.

Professor Suleiman Khalid Jega, the Executive Chairman of Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board, lauded Governor Nasir Idris for his monumental achievements in revamping basic education. He provided statistics detailing the progress made in terms of the total number of primary schools, junior secondary schools, and teachers under the board.

Governor Nasir Idris reiterated his dedication to addressing key issues in education, including the condition of teachers, the challenge of out-of-school children, and poor examination results, declaring a revolutionary approach to the education sector in Kebbi state.
