A somber cloud hovers over Ebonyi State University as the family of Ebube Akah, a promising student, seeks justice after a tragic road accident involving the convoy of Governor Francis Nwifuru claimed the lives of Ebube and a motorcycle rider last week.

The incident unfolded on Friday, December 1, in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State. Despite Governor Nwifuru’s reported absence from the convoy at the time of the accident, grief and sorrow now engulf the Akah family.

Ebube’s older brother, Isidore Akah, has accused the police of a cover-up, alleging that they have not taken any action despite a meeting with the Commissioner of Police. Isidore recounted the heartbreaking events, revealing that the police labeled Ebube’s remains as “unknown” in the morgue and removed the SIM cards from his phone, hindering family communication.

The tragedy unfolded as Ebube embarked on a routine trip on Afikpo Road via Onwe Road in the Abakaliki metropolis. The collision occurred when the motorcycle he was on collided with a car in Governor Nwifuru’s convoy, en route to pick up the governor’s children from school.

Both Ebube and the unidentified motorcyclist from Zamfara State lost their lives instantly. Isidore expressed frustration over the lack of transparency, accusing law enforcement of protecting the driver involved in the collision.

The family, grappling with grief, discovered Ebube’s body in the morgue two days after an extensive search. The death has taken a toll on the family, especially on their widowed mother, already dealing with high blood pressure since their father’s passing in 2021.

While Ebube’s body remains in the morgue, the motorcyclist has been laid to rest according to Islamic rites in Abakaliki.

The police confirmed the incident but did not address specific allegations, and Governor Nwifuru and his media aide are yet to respond to inquiries.

This heartbreaking incident has left the community mourning and demanding accountability, as the Akah family presses for justice amid the shadows cast by the tragedy.
