Super Eagles seek redemption against Guinea-Bissau in AFCON qualifiers
While many believe the Super Eagles did not play well enough on Friday, head coach Jose Peseiro disagrees.
The qualification series for the 2024 AFCON tournament continues on Monday in Group A, where Nigeria, ranked 35th in the world, lost to Guinea Bissau, ranked 118th, on Friday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium. Nigeria must now quickly return to winning ways in order to reclaim group leadership.
The Super Eagles, coached by Jose Peseiro, lost their fourth consecutive match, which was yet another indication of how poorly things have been going for the team recently.
During this losing streak, the Eagles have scored only once.
The three-time African champions, valued at $360 million, were defeated in front of their home fans by Guinea Bissau’s wild dogs, valued at $7.5 million. Despite having assembled stars from Europe’s top five leagues, such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, and Moses Simon, the three-time African champions lost.
While many believe that the Super Eagles did not play well enough on Friday in Abuja, coach Jose Peseiro disagrees, stating that his team was simply unlucky not to score from the opportunities they created.
“We are sad and upset about this unfortunate outcome. But we played a good game, were very offensive, and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities that we missed.
“We hope to duplicate this performance in Guinea, but with more goals. Before departing for the second leg scheduled for Estadio Nacional 24 de Setembro, the 62-year-old manager affirmed on Twitter over the weekend that his team would be giving their all to win.
We are sad and upset about this unfortunate outcome. But we played a good game, were very offensive, and created numerous opportunities to score, which we missed. We hope to duplicate this performance in Guinea, but with more goals. We are putting forth every effort and making every sacrifice to win.
We are sad and upset with this bad result. But we played a good game, very attacking, and created many goalscoring opportunities that unfortunately we didn't take. We want to repeat this performance in Guinea, but scoring. We are going with all our commitment and sacrifice to win pic.twitter.com/qL36h6of8c

The Super Eagles have previously bounced back from a similar 0-1 loss to the Central African Republic (CAR) and won 2-0 in Douala, Cameroon, in the return leg.
In contrast to the CAR scenario, which was played at a neutral venue in Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau will be playing in front of their vociferous fans, who will pressure them to beat Nigeria twice.
Baciro Cande, the coach of Guinea-Bissau, is not elated by Friday’s shocking result, as he wants his team to focus on securing another victory against their heavyweight opponents.
“For the second leg, we will revisit our strategy for playing Nigeria. Clearly, we will strive for another victory. “Despite our victory, we still respect the Eagles,” Cande said.
Before departing for home on Saturday, Djurtus captain Braima Nogueira Jorge stated that Guinea Bissau had demonstrated that a team’s pedigree does not determine the outcome of football matches.
“Nigeria is blessed with talented players who are well-known for playing for top clubs around the world.
“We scored a goal and defended effectively to defeat Nigeria. “This is a great victory, and we want to return home to finish the job,” Jorge said.
The Super Eagles cannot afford another loss in Monday’s match, as it could jeopardise their qualification hopes.
Guinea-Bissau currently leads Group A with seven points from three games, followed by Nigeria with six points from the same number of contests.
Sierra Leone, third in the group with five points, will host the Super Eagles for matchday 5 in the next round of fixtures.
Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze could start on the bench, according to rumours, if the team’s back is against the wall and its coach Peseiro is forced to make adjustments.
Semi Ajayi is the most likely replacement for Kevin Akpoguma, but the more experienced Kenneth Omeruo is also a possibility.
