Police officer Killed As Gunmen Attack INEC Office In Enugu

An extremely tragic development involved gunmen striking in Enugu State, where one police officer was killed and another was injured.

On Sunday evening, gunmen opened fire on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

According to Festus Okoye, National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the hoodlums were repelled by soldiers and police from the 82nd Division after they struck around 9.12 p.m.

The Commission did promise that the attack would not have an impact on its planning for the general elections in 2023.

The electoral body stated: “Our office in Enugu South Local Government Area was attacked by unidentified gunmen, according to Dr. Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu, the resident electoral commissioner (REC) for Enugu State.

“The gatehouse for security was destroyed. Fortunately, thanks to the quick action of the Police and Army members from 82 Division, the attackers were unable to enter the main building.

As soon as they learned about the attack, the State Commissioner of Police and the REC personally arrived on the scene.

“Of the two police officers assigned to guard the building, one died, and the other was injured and is being treated. The Commission offers prayers for the deceased police officer’s soul to find peace and for the injured to heal quickly.

The security agencies are looking into the attack. The Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), which is co-chaired by the REC and the Commissioner of Police, has also met in Enugu State to discuss the most recent incident and devise new plans for fortifying the offices and safeguarding the staff members and materials.

The Commission is continuing with its scheduled preparations for the 2023 General Election in Enugu State and the entire nation while the destroyed gatehouse is being rebuilt.
