14 die, 24 inmates escape as gunmen attack Mexican border prison

At least 14 people have died after gunmen attacked a prison in Ciudad Juarez, a border city in northern Mexico, allowing 24 prisoners to escape on Sunday.

According to reports from state officials, the Mexican Army’s agents arrived at Cereso Number 3 State Prison following the attack.

This online newspaper reports that the Chihuahua state prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Sunday that the gunmen entered the prison at 7am local time (14:00 GMT) in a number of armored vehicles.

Then, in a vicious attack, they started shooting at the guards, killing 10 of them along with four prisoners.

At least 13 people were hurt as rioting inmates fought with prison guards and set fire to various items.

Later on Sunday, according to the state prosecutor’s office, Mexican soldiers and state police took back control of the prison.

The office reported that at least four people had been taken into custody but did not specify whether they were inmates or armed attackers.
