Gunmen attack soldiers in Imo community
Gunmen allegedly ambushed officers of the 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Obinze, Owerri, on Monday when they were on patrol in the Izombe community in the Oguta council area of Imo.
Capt. Joseph Akubo, the Brigade’s spokesperson, verified this to newsmen on Monday in Owerri.
According to Akubo, the incident took place after soldiers were sent to the oil-rich region to quell local youth unrest and other crimes.
He explained that some unidentified individuals killed a truck driver in an incident on Saturday, which prompted the soldiers to strengthen patrol.

“The soldiers came under attack by armed youngsters when they were conducting a regular patrol in the area.
“A truck driver was killed two days ago, and there have been other criminal acts that have required extra patrol.
“The soldiers came under attack while they were on routine patrol,” he said.
However, Akubo claimed that because the youngsters and soldiers were still engaged in a bloody struggle, he could not immediately establish the number of casualties.
He continued, “The armed youths are still attacking our men who are taking cover in the buildings in the neighbourhood, so I cannot tell you the casualty figure.”
