Again, hoodlums vandalise INEC office in Imo

On Thursday, the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State was targeted by unknown assailants, who caused property damage and partially set the building on fire.

This information was made public on Friday in a statement that was signed by Festus Okoye, who serves as the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

Following assaults on INEC local government offices in the states of Ogun, Osun, and Ebonyi within the past three weeks, this is the fourth attack on INEC’s local government offices.

Earlier in the year 2020, a fire was started in the building that is currently undergoing extensive renovations.

According to the statement, three of the seven construction workers who had been kidnapped were eventually set free.

The following is an excerpt from the statement that was released: “The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Imo State, Professor Sylvia Uchenna Agu, reported that our office in Orlu Local Government Area was attacked.” Yesterday, on Thursday the first of December 2022, the incident took place.

“The building, which is undergoing extensive renovations as a result of an earlier attack, was vandalised and partially set ablaze,” the police report stated.

Three of the seven construction workers who were being employed were kidnapped, but they were later freed.

“But for the prompt response of the Nigeria Police, which has deployed its personnel to the site, the damages could have been much more extensive.”

“We have had one attack too many already. The Commission has stated once more that it is concerned about the recent spate of attacks on its facilities and the negative effects that these attacks are having on our preparations for the General Election in 2023.
