On Sunday, July 23, 2023, a tragic incident occurred on the Benin-Owo Expressway at Ifon in the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, resulting in the death of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who was stationed at a checkpoint. The officer was hit and killed by a reckless hit-and-run driver.
Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased officer had attempted to halt the vehicle, but the driver callously struck him and fled the scene without stopping to render assistance.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the heartbreaking incident.

She clarified that contrary to an earlier report suggesting the involvement of suspected kidnappers, the tragedy was, in fact, a hit-and-run case.
As the news unfolded, it was revealed that the driver responsible for the accident was eventually apprehended by the Nigeria Army in Sobe, Edo State, after a pursuit.
The body of the fallen police officer was promptly taken to the morgue to undergo proper procedures.
The incident has caused deep sorrow and concern within the Ondo State Police Command and among the officer’s colleagues.
