Nigeria Opens Applications for Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) Cohort 5.

Nigeria has officially begun accepting applications for Cohort 5 of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), inviting businesswomen to take part in this empowering initiative. AWE, an initiative of the U.S. government, is dedicated to equipping women with the necessary skills, resources, and networks to establish and expand successful businesses. The program operates in various regions, including Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and other areas prioritized for advancing women’s economic empowerment.

AWE employs a hybrid approach, combining the online platform “DreamBuilder,” developed in collaboration with Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management and FreeportMcMoRan, a global copper mining company, with in-person mentoring and facilitation. Participants engage in self-paced online modules to learn essential business skills, followed by virtual classroom discussions led by experienced implementers, local mentors, and U.S. Exchange Alumni.

Moreover, AWE offers additional training on how to competently apply for financing from the U.S. African Development Foundation and navigate the U.S. federal grants process. The program requires a minimum commitment of six hours per week for a combination of self-study and online facilitated classes. While most of the program activities will take place virtually, successful applicants will also have the opportunity to participate in one in-person networking session.

This year, AWE is particularly interested in attracting 150 talented applicants working in the agriculture, creative industries, and tech sectors. The application deadline is set for June 19, 2023.
