INEC, FG makes Crucial Move to ensure Free election for 2023

FG Deploys Soldiers, DSS, Others To Guard INEC Offices Nationwide

Soldiers, agents of the Department of State Services (DSS), and officers of the Civil Defence Corps will now provide statewide security for Independent National Electoral Commission offices.

This was revealed on Thursday at a meeting with the leaders of political parties held at the Force headquarters in Abuja by Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba.

Police officers and members of the Federal Fire Service have been dispatched to protect INEC assets around the nation, according to the police chief.

The attacks on the electoral agency’s offices in Ogun and Osun State last week, as well as a string of political unrest in Borno, Kaduna, and Zamfara states, according to Baba, are what prompted the deployment.

He claimed that in order to stop acts of political violence in the nation, security agencies have been instructed to improve intelligence gathering, sharing, and use of the information.

Baba further stated that security personnel would take swift, legitimate action against anyone engaging in hate speech, inciting violence, organizing thugs, or other offences.

In response to the ICCES meeting, he stated, “On our part, and as a result, the Nigeria Police Force working in collaboration with other security agencies have resolved to enhance intelligence gathering, share and utilise same to stem acts of political violence; upscale the deployment of security teams to all INEC assets and facilities nationwide with teams drawn from the police, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Civil and Security Defence Corps, and the Federal Fire Services.

According to the IGP, suspects have been detained in relation to the political violence that has grown in scope over the past few weeks.

Baba added that those who had already been detained would be prosecuted.
