The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared on Friday that reports in some media outlets that it intends to rig the general elections of 2023 by forgoing the Registration Area Technical Support Staff’s (RATECHSS) direct and real-time electronic upload of Polling Units (Pus) results to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal are categorically false.

Festus Okoye, the INEC commissioner for information and voter education, reportedly said this in Abuja.

The commission has assured Nigerians time and time again that it will transmit results directly from the polling places, as was the case in the governorship elections for Ekiti and Osun States as well as 103 additional constituencies where bye-elections and off-cycle governorship/FCT Area Council elections were held since August 2020. The portal still offers access to the findings.

One of the innovations used by the Commission to guarantee the accuracy and legitimacy of election results in Nigeria is the IReV. Therefore, it is improbable that the Commission will reverse course and attack its own innovations.

The general populace is urged to disregard the reports. IReV and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) are here to stay, according to Okoye.
