IDF Airstrike Kills Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.

The Israeli military confirmed on Saturday that an airstrike in Beirut, the Lebanese capital, killed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran. Nasrallah, who had been in control of Hezbollah for over three decades, was reportedly eliminated alongside other senior commanders, including Ali Karki, the Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front.

The airstrike, which occurred on Friday afternoon, was part of an ongoing series of Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah leaders. The militant group has been launching rockets and drones across Lebanon’s southern border into Israel for nearly a year.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), in a statement quoted by CBS News, confirmed that the strike took out Hezbollah’s leadership team at a command facility “embedded under a residential building” in Beirut’s southern suburbs. These suburbs have long been a stronghold for Hezbollah, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S.

“The strike was conducted while Hezbollah’s senior chain of command were operating from the headquarters and advancing terrorist activities against the citizens of the State of Israel,” the IDF said.

The Friday airstrikes were the latest and largest in a series of massive explosions that rocked Beirut, targeting Hezbollah leadership. Multiple high-rise apartment buildings were leveled in the blast, which has been described as the biggest to hit Beirut since Hezbollah began firing on Israel on October 8, 2023. This escalation came after Israel launched its war against Hamas, Hezbollah’s ally, in the Gaza Strip.

Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed that at least six people were killed and 91 were wounded in the strike, cautioning that the death toll could rise as more victims are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue operations were ongoing as of Saturday.

Nasrallah’s death marks a significant blow to Hezbollah. He had led the organization since the early 1990s, steering its operations across Lebanon and playing a key role in the group’s regional influence in the Middle East.

His elimination, alongside other high-ranking officials, is expected to create a leadership vacuum within Hezbollah and could lead to further escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed group.
