Former CAF President, Issa Hayatou, Dies at 77.

 

The football world today lost Issa Hayatou, former President of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, who died Thursday in Paris at the age of 77.

 

Hayatou was one of the gigantic heads of African football, having headed CAF for a record 29 years from 1988 to 2017. During his tenure, he oversaw some milestones that lifted African football to its rightful place on the international platform. That was the period that saw the expansion of representation for the continent at the FIFA World Cup.

Issa Hayatou hosted 2010 FIFA World Cup. 

One of the best things Hayatou did was to lead the successful hosting of the South African 2010 FIFA World Cup, first in the history of this most respected tournament on the African continent. This was essentially a result of his tireless crusade towards African football and his zeal in lifting the sport on this continent.

For many, Hayatou will remain that astute leader and the champion of African football. His contributions have been so immense that they are simply hard to be forgotten by generations of players, administrators, and fans across the African continent and beyond in regard to the sport.
