Nigerian human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has issued a caution, warning that referring to a legal practitioner as a “charge and bail lawyer” could result in a defamation lawsuit if the lawyer takes offense. Effiong pointed out that this term is often used disparagingly, especially towards lawyers who are involved in high-profile or controversial cases.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Effiong argued that a lawyer who has never been labeled a “charge and bail lawyer” may not be doing serious legal work or engaging with topical issues in the country. He noted that people who may not fully understand a lawyer’s professional standing or achievements often resort to such labels.

Effiong further stressed that courts in Nigeria have previously ruled that using the term can be defamatory. He advised the public to be mindful of this, as lawyers might pursue legal action if they feel offended by such remarks.
