Former Nigerian Senator Iyorchia Ayu was elected President of the Senate during the Nigerian Third Republic (1992–1993), a position she held for a period of two years. In the following years, he worked in various ministerial positions in the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, from 1999 to 2007.
Iyorchia Ayu Early career
Ayu was born in the town of Gboko in the state of Benue. He taught sociology at the University of Jos, where he also taught courses on the art and science of Marxism. He also served as the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities chapter at the University of Jos (ASUU).
After entering politics, he gained popularity among the Tiv people, who constituted the majority in his home state of Benue. In the Third Republic, he was elected to the Senate on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and he later rose to the position of Senate President. It was in November 1993 that the Senate voted to impeach Ayu, who had been a vocal opponent of the Interim National Government, which had been established after the elected president Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola had been prevented from taking office by military intervention. However, he later rose through the ranks of General Sani Abacha’s military government to become Minister of Education.
In March 1994, he presided over a workshop on Technical Education in Nigeria, in which he sought to learn from Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan about how to improve technical education in Nigeria.
Mr. Ayu was rumoured to be the political godfather of George Akume, the former governor of Benue State who served from 1999 to 2007. Ayu worked on the People’s Democratic Party’s campaign to elect President Olusegun Obasanjo during the 1998-1999 election cycle (PDP platform). From 1999 to 2000, President Obasanjo appointed him to the position of Minister of Industry.
Ayu was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs in July 2003, and he has held the position since. According to Ayu, Nigeria was negotiating security agreements with its northern neighbours Niger and Chad in order to combat smuggling, human trafficking, and cross-border banditry at the time of his announcement in September 2003. In June 2004, he established the Prisons Monitoring Committee to protect the rights of prisoners to live in humane conditions while incarcerated.
In August 2004, Ayu announced that his ministry had begun the distribution of national identification cards to the general public. In addition to serving as an identification card, the new card would also serve as a validation card for other documents such as passports and drivers’ licences. It would also serve as a tool for regulating migration flows, generating data for government planning, and detecting criminal activity, among other things.
