James Ibori’s Biography and James Ibori’s Net Worth

When Ibori was proposed as governor of Delta State, he was required to declare that he had no previous convictions under Nigerian law. With the help of a false birth certificate and passport that he had used for the mortgage application in London, he passed the tests and was elected to the position of governor in 1999. He has served in that position since 1999. In 2003, he was re-elected to a second four-year term as governor of the state.

The PDP’s pre-election gathering in 2006 saw Ibori present to shake the hand of the victorious Umaru Yar’Adua, who was in attendance to accept the award. Following the selection of Yar’Adua as their presidential candidate, Ibori was accused of bankrolling Yar’Adua’s 2007 presidential campaign in exchange for a vice presidential seat in the United States. However, after Yar’Adua died while still in office, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, who was an outspoken political opponent of Ibori, took over as president.

James Ibori’s corruption charges

United Kingdom charges

Ibori’s corruption allegations began with the filing of petitions by his kinsmen under the auspices of the Delta State Elders and Stakeholders Forum, which was inspired by the prominent Ijaw leader, Chief E. K. Clark, OFR, CON, who also served as the previous Minister of Information in the state. The petition was addressed to Nuhu Ribadu, the head of Nigeria’s financial crime agencies, who initially failed to act on the petition that prompted the formation of the Forum, who, along with other activists, revealed Ibori’s crimes and made spirited efforts to bring Ibori and the EFCC before a court of law to compel Ibori’s prosecution with the assistance of their lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, to face justice.

The Metropolitan Police searched the London offices of lawyer Bhadresh Gohil in 2007, and he was arrested. They discovered computer hard discs with information about a slew of offshore firms run for Ibori by Gohil, fiduciary agent Daniel Benedict McCann, and corporate financier Lambertus De Boer, which were hidden behind a fireplace in a wall behind the fireplace. All of these men were eventually sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison.

As a result of these charges of corruption, the courts in the United Kingdom froze Ibori’s assets in the country, which were valued at approximately £17 million ($35 million) at the time of the freezing. His wife, Nkoyo, was arrested at Heathrow Airport in London on November 1, 2007, in connection with an investigation into her husband’s assets, particularly those in the United Kingdom. She was released on bail the following day. After being interrogated, she was allowed to leave. The claims against Ibori were disputed in an exclusive interview with CNN, with the politician alleging they were politically motivated. Nuhu Ribadu, as well as the UK Courts, he claimed, were engaging in political manoeuvring.

Nigerian charges against James Ibori

On December 12, 2007, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apprehended Ibori at the Kwara State Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, and took him into custody. He is facing charges of theft of public funds, abuse of office, and money laundering, among other things.

The corruption accusations levelled against Ibori by the government of former President Obasanjo are among a slew of others made by Nuhu Ribadu, the anti-corruption czar, against former executives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria. Ribadu further claimed that Ibori attempted to bribe him into dropping the accusations by presenting him with a cash gift of $15 million, which Ribadu immediately deposited in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) account. The cash is still on display at the CBN as an exhibit.

On December 17, 2009, a Federal High Court in Asaba, Delta State, discharged and acquitted Ibori of all 170 corruption allegations brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). An appeal against the December 17, 2009 judgement was filed by the EFCC, and the agency has begun a new round of investigations into the former governor’s activities in response to a petition signed by members of the Delta State Elders, Leaders, and Stakeholders Forum, which was made available to the general public in March 2010.

Another set of Nigerian charges

Ibori’s case file was reopened in April 2010, almost three months after Goodluck Jonathan assumed control of the government. According to the police, new allegations of embezzlement of N40 billion ($266 million) were lodged against him. Attempts to apprehend him were met with failure. It was stated that he ran from Abuja to Lagos and then to the creeks of Oghara, his hometown in the Niger Delta, before being apprehended. It has been alleged that he has been guarded by armed militias and that they have engaged in a shootout with government security forces on at least one occasion. He asserted that the charges against him were baseless and that he was a victim of political persecution.

In April 2010, Ibori fled Nigeria, forcing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to seek the aid of Interpol. Ibori used Delta State as collateral for an N40 billion loan when he was governor, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Malam Sanusi Lamido, who made the revelation on July 12, 2010.

James Ibori was convicted.

Arrest in Dubai; extradition to the UK

On May 13, 2010, Ibori was apprehended in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as a result of Interpol arrest orders issued by United Kingdom courts and implemented by the Metropolitan Police Department. Ibori was released on bail pending the outcome of his extradition hearing. The Metropolitan Police announced that the United Kingdom would “demand Mr. Ibori’s extradition,” according to a spokesman for the force.

The Nigerian government and the United Kingdom then agreed to collaborate on Ibori’s extradition to the United Kingdom. Ibori is currently detained in Nigeria. Even though Dubai authorities were restricting his movement, he continued to work. On the other hand, the Punch newspaper claimed on May 27, 2010, that Ibori was seeking political refuge in Dubai.

The investigation and extradition of Ibori turned out to be one of the most time-consuming, difficult, and expensive operations undertaken by Scotland Yard in recent years. Government prosecutors said that businesses affiliated with President Ibori and his family benefited from the sale of state assets, which included stakes in an operating company for mobile telephones as well as crude oil delivery. On Thursday, June 10, 2010, the EFCC reported that Ibori was being held in detention pending extradition to the United Kingdom.

James Ibori’s Conviction of Associates

In London, where Ibori is being sought in connection with a money-laundering investigation, the authorities continued to prosecute his friends, who were indicted for assisting Ibori in the laundering of money in the first place.

Christine Ibie-Ibori, James Ibori’s sister, and Udoamaka Okoronkwo, a business associate of James Ibori, were found guilty of money laundering on June 1 and 2, 2010, by a jury in the United Kingdom. The verdict was delivered at the Southwark Crown Court in London. Mr. James Ibori, through a media assistant, issued a statement in which he questioned the authenticity of the verdict, which he claimed absolved the two other women, Ms. Okoronkwo and Adebimpe Pogoson, who were prosecuted with his sister and were found not guilty. The jury’s verdict on June 2, 2010, however, found Okoronkwo guilty as well, and the verdict was announced on June 3, 2010.

Christine Ibie-Ibori and Udoamaka Okoronkwo were both sentenced to five years in prison by a UK court on Monday, June 7, 2010, even though their defence attorneys appealed for leniency, claiming that the convicts were only being used by James Ibori and his associates.

James Ibori’s Conviction

Having been accused of stealing US$250 million from the Nigerian public purse, Ibori entered a guilty plea to ten counts of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud on February 27, 2012, at Southwark Crown Court in London, England.

Following Ibori’s guilty plea, the EFCC appealed a 2009 ruling by a Federal High Court in Asaba, which had found Ibori not guilty. The EFCC was successful, and the case was heard by an appeals court.

Their application for judicial review was based on a claim that the ruling of the lower court was invalid because the presiding judge, Justice Awokulehin, made an error of law in delivering his decision. In a decision issued on May 15, 2014, a three-member panel of justices at the Benin Division of the Court of Appeal decided that the former governor has a case to answer. With this ruling, Ibori would be free to stand trial in Nigeria following the completion of his prison sentence in the United Kingdom.

Ibori was sentenced to 13 years in prison by Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, for the offences he committed. Among the items seized were the following:
