A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, has remanded Hon. Ephraim Nwuzi, the representative for the Etche/Omuma federal constituency in the House of Representatives, to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in the state.

The police accused the federal lawmaker, who is also the All Progressives Congress candidate for the Etche-Omuma Federal Constituency in the 25 February 2023 election, of treasonable felony, conspiracy, inciting communal conflict, and violence.

On Wednesday, when the case was Heard in court, the accused’s attorney, Emenike Ebete, made an oral bail application.

The prosecution and the Investigation Police Officers in charge of the case opposed the bail application, requesting that Hon. Nwuzi be remanded to allow for a proper investigation and arraignment.

After hearing the arguments, Chief Magistrate O Amadi-Nna remanded Ephraim Nwuzi based on the allegations.

Counsel for the federal lawmaker told newsmen outside the courtroom that the charges filed against his client were insufficient to warrant remand.

Ebete stated, “We have also argued to the court that the offenses detailed in the particulars and affidavit attached to the alleged allegations do not warrant his remand.

“The court, in its wisdom, determined that the offenses were minor and remanded him to prison until March 3, 2023, pending the filing of a formal charge against him by the state.”

According to our correspondent, police officers allegedly broke into Nwuzi’s residence in Chokocho, Etche LGA, on Wednesday morning and arrested him there.

Recall that the spokesperson of the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, stated in a statement that the Supervising Assistant Inspector General of Police for the elections in Rivers State, Abutu Yaro, had invited Hon. Nwuzi over an inciting video in which he allegedly directed his supporters to attack certain individuals, including INEC officials, during the elections.
