Kogi Explosion: DSS arrests ISWAP commander, others in connection with Kogi bomb blast

On Wednesday, the Department of State Services announced the arrest of two men who were responsible for the deadly bombing that took place on December 29, 2022, close to the Palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland in Okene, Kogi State, during President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the region to dedicate a number of projects.

AbdulmumIbrahim OTARU (also known as Abu Mikdad) and one of his associates, Saidu SULEIMAN, were detained on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, according to a statement from the DSS provided to ejesgist.ng by its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya.

However, according to Afunanya, the main organizer—a commander of the Islamic States in West Africa—suffered a leg injury in the course of trying to flee.

“The (DSS) wishes to inform the public that it has arrested the mastermind of the Vehicle-Borne Explosive Device (VBIED) attack that occurred on December 29, 2022, near the Palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland in Okene, Kogi State, during the visit of the President to commission some projects,” the statement read.

“On January 3, 2023, the Service detained Abdulmumin Ibrahim OTARU (also known as Abu Mikdad) and Saidu SULEIMAN, one of his associates. OTARU was wounded by gunfire on his left foot while trying to flee. At this time, he is being treated in a hospital.

The following nefarious operations were either coordinated by OTARU, a high-ranking commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), or he participated in them. “The attack on the Nigeria Police Area Command, Eika-Ohizenyi, Okehi LGA of Kogi State on June 24, 2022.

In those two attacks—the 5th July 2022 attack on the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Center in Kuje Area Council of the FCT and the 5th August 2022 attack on West African Ceramics Ltd (WACL) in Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi—a police inspector was killed and two AK-47 rifles were taken away.

Recall that the attack also claimed the lives of five other people, including two police officers, two company drivers, and an Indian.

“In and around Kogi State, OTARU ran terrorist cells. He and his gang had also carried out a number of kidnapping operations in the states of Ondo and Kogi. The suspects are currently in custody and will face the appropriate charges.
