Supreme Court replaces Shekarau with Hanga as NNPP senatorial candidate for Kano Central
The Supreme Court has upheld Senator Rufa’i Hanga’s nomination as the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate for the 25 February National Assembly election.
In a unanimous ruling on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court led by Justice Inyang Okoro faulted the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to replace Senator Ibrahim Shekarau with Hanga after he defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prior to the election.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who read the lead opinion authored by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, ruled that INEC’s appeal should be dismissed.
The court upheld the concurrent judgments of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, both located in Abuja, which held that Hanga was the NNPP’s candidate for the election.
