Tension is escalating in Kano following the deployment of soldiers to the mini-palace of dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero. The former emir was removed from his position by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on May 24, who then appointed Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as his replacement.

Governor Yusuf issued an immediate arrest order for Bayero, accusing him of defying directives to vacate his palace. The governor claims that Bayero’s return to the palace is an attempt to forcefully reclaim his position, thus creating unrest in the state. The situation is further complicated by allegations from the deputy governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who accused National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu of facilitating Bayero’s return by providing two jets for his transportation.

After his dethronement, the Kano governor re-appointed Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as the emir.
