No fewer than six Nigerian states have declared Monday, July 8, a public holiday in observance of Hijrah 1446. This work-free day will allow Muslims in these states to celebrate the Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah.

States Observing the Holiday.
Governors from Osun, Jigawa, Oyo, Kwara, and others have all declared public holidays to celebrate Hijrah 1446, which starts on Sunday, July 7. Given that Sunday is already a non-working day in Nigeria, the holiday is observed on Monday.

Osun State.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State declared Monday a public holiday to commemorate Hijrah 1446. In his statement, Adeleke urged the Muslim community to use the day for reflection and prayer, emphasizing unity and harmony among all residents.
Oyo State.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State also declared Monday a work-free day for the Hijrah celebration. He congratulated the Muslim community, encouraging prayers for peace, prosperity, and unity.
Kebbi State.
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State declared Monday a public holiday for Hijrah. He called on residents to promote peace respect for each other’s beliefs and foster spirit of understanding in the state.
Kwara State.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State announced Monday as a holiday for Hijrah. He urged the Muslim community to use the day for introspection and to promote tolerance, mutual respect, and justice.
Jigawa State.
Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State declared Monday a public holiday to celebrate Hijrah 1446. He congratulated the Muslim community, urging prayers for peace, prosperity, and unity.
Kano State.
The Kano State Government, under Governor Yusuf Abba, has also declared Monday a public holiday. Abba encouraged citizens to reflect on the past year and engage in positive activities that benefit everyone.
A Call for National Recognition
In a related development, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake of Egba Land, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare July 13 as Soyinka Day in honor of Professor Wole Soyinka’s contributions to humanity. Gbadebo also suggested that the federal government should honor Soyinka with the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger.
