Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe Emerges New NBA President

The Nigerian Bar Association has just elected Mazi Afam Josiah Chigwe SAN as its new National President. Chigwe polled a total of 20,435 votes to emerge victorious in the 2024 NBA National Officers Election.

Chigwe defeated his closest rival, Mr. Tobenna Chigbo Erojikwe, who secured 10,998 votes, while Chukwuma Nwabueze Ikwuazom SAN came third with 9,018 votes. The election results were announced following a transparent and competitive process that saw active participation from members of the legal profession across Nigeria.

In an acceptance speech, Chigwe thanked members of the NBA for reposing confidence in his leadership and assured them that he would focus on lawyers’ welfare, argue for judicial reforms, and increase the role of the association in promoting the rule of law in Nigeria.

“I am humbled by the confidence you have shown in me. Together, we will work toward strengthening our legal system, ensuring the rule of law, and advocating for the rights of all Nigerians,” Chigwe said.

The electronic election witnessed quite a huge turnout from voters, thus showing the level of engagement and commitment of the NBA members toward the future of the association. The process has been described as very transparent and efficient.

Outgoing NBA President Olumide Akpata congratulated Chigwe over his victory, promising to ensure a seamless transition. “The NBA is in capable hands. I have no doubt that Mazi Afam Josiah Chigwe SAN will continue to build on the foundation we have laid and take the association to greater heights,” Akpata said.

He will be formally sworn in during the NBA Annual General Conference next month. His administration is going to handle, among other key issues, judicial independence, legal education, and welfare for lawyers. He prays to better the legal profession, make positive contributions toward the delivery of justice in Nigeria, and accomplish much more.
