Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, has found herself in the eye of a social media storm following her endorsement of Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election.
The actress, in a video widely shared on social media, can be seen urging voters to support Okpebholo at a rally, highlighting the need for change in the state.

During the rally, Johnson emphasized the lack of basic infrastructure in Edo, including electricity, healthcare, and roads, and called for residents to vote for Okpebholo to address these issues. She rallied the crowd by asking, “Are you not tired? No light, water, healthcare, security, and good roads. If you will vote for Senator Monday, raise your hand.”
Despite her appeal, Johnson’s public endorsement has been met with significant backlash online, with critics accusing her of aligning with the ruling APC despite widespread economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
Many have expressed disappointment in her decision to campaign for a party associated with the current administration, which has been criticized for its handling of the nation’s economy.
Okpebholo will be contesting against Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), among other candidates, in the September 21 election.
This is not the first time a celebrity’s involvement in politics has stirred controversy, with Johnson now facing similar criticism for her endorsement of a political figure.
