A 57-year-old Indonesian woman, identified as Hapsah, was killed by a 16-foot python in a devastating incident that occurred last week in Muaro Jambi, Sumatra. Hapsah, a grandmother, was performing her routine task of tapping rubber trees on a plantation when the attack happened.
According to reports, the massive python wrapped itself around Hapsah, attempting to swallow her whole. Despite her desperate struggle, she was overpowered by the snake, losing consciousness due to lack of oxygen.

Her husband, M Safri, who also worked on the plantation, grew worried when Hapsah did not return home as expected. Upon searching for her, he found the snake still coiled tightly around her neck.
Sungai Gelam Police Chief Iptu Usaha Sitepu confirmed that M Safri tried to save his wife by pulling the snake’s tail and striking it until it released its grip. Sadly, by the time the snake was subdued, Hapsah had already succumbed to her injuries.

The tragedy has left the local community in shock. In response, a group of villagers hunted down and killed the python. Village head Amdi described the snake as “massive” and stated that it was brought to the village to be shown to the community after being killed.
Hapsah’s body has been returned to her family, who are now preparing for her funeral.
This incident marks the second fatal python attack in Indonesia this summer. Days earlier, another elderly woman from Palopo City was killed by a serpent in the Sumara Mbu mountains.
