The newly appointed Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, has vowed to focus on securing the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s victory in Kano State for the upcoming 2027 elections, setting aside national priorities to emphasize local politics.
Ata’s declaration comes despite Nigeria’s escalating housing crisis. In 2023, official statistics placed the country’s housing deficit at 28 million units, requiring an estimated N21 trillion in funding to address the shortfall.

However, Ata has openly stated that his primary interest lies in the political landscape of Kano State.
Ata’s Focus on Kano Central for APC’s Comeback
“My appointment was primarily driven by political considerations,” Ata remarked, highlighting the significance of Kano State in APC’s strategic plans. “The APC lost control of Kano in the last elections, but we are determined to reclaim it. The main challenge lies in Kano Central, and that is my home base.”
Ata, who is from the influential Kano Central district, emphasized his commitment to grassroots politics. “Even as a minister, I will continue to be actively present in my ward. We are going to work diligently to ensure that the APC regains its stronghold in Kano by 2027.”
Balancing Ministerial Role with Political Ambitions
Despite his role in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Ata made it clear that his priorities lean heavily towards local political engagements. “While I am committed to my duties in the ministry, my mission remains primarily political. I plan to return to Kano State every week to focus on consolidating the APC’s position ahead of the next elections,” Ata told journalists.
This declaration has sparked debate about the minister’s divided focus, raising questions about his commitment to addressing Nigeria’s severe housing needs while prioritizing the APC’s political ambitions in Kano.
Public Reaction and Potential Impact
Ata’s statement underscores the significant role Kano plays in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially for the APC, which seeks to strengthen its influence ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, his stance may attract criticism from stakeholders concerned about the urgent need for progress in addressing the national housing crisis.
The minister’s prioritization of local politics over federal duties is likely to be a subject of ongoing scrutiny, especially as the 2027 elections draw closer.
