El-Rufai highlighted that the government’s initial decision to remove fuel subsidy, as announced by President Bola Tinubu in his inaugural speech, was aimed at addressing what was deemed an unjustifiable expense.

However, El-Rufai expressed his support for the policy while acknowledging the necessity for adjustments in its implementation.

According to El-Rufai, the reintroduction of fuel subsidy is a reflection of the government’s recognition of the inadequacy of support packages intended to mitigate its impact. He emphasized the need for pragmatic policy adjustments in response to evolving circumstances.

El-Rufai asserted, “Fuel subsidy is another policy that has been implemented by the president, it’s the right policy. I always supported withdrawing fuel subsidy.”

He added, “But, in the course of implementation as you can see the government has now realized that the subsidy has to be back because right now, we are paying a lot of money for subsidy even more than before.

Despite the resurgence of fuel subsidy, El-Rufai noted a lack of awareness among many Nigerians regarding its reinstatement.

He encouraged individuals to compare the prices of petrol and diesel to gauge the existence of subsidy, pointing out that diesel is priced higher than petrol.
