The Nigerian national grid has collapsed again, marking the second time in just three days that the system has faltered, causing outages across various regions. According to data from the Nigerian System Operator, power generation plummeted to zero megawatts at around 11:30 a.m. on November 7, impacting numerous power plants nationwide.
Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) quickly confirmed the collapse. Ikeja Electric notified its customers on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We experienced a system outage today at 11:29Hrs, affecting supply within our network.”
They assured customers that efforts were underway with stakeholders to restore power.
Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) reported “a simultaneous loss of supply across our network” at the same time, suggesting a “potential system failure.” Jos Electricity Distribution Company echoed the message, noting that their franchise states were affected due to the national grid’s power supply loss at 11:28 a.m.
TCN Silent Amid Rising Grid Failures
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not yet issued an official statement on the latest incident.
However, Tuesday’s collapse was attributed to “a series of lines and generators trippings,” causing grid instability.
As grid disruptions continue, the Federal Government has pointed to aging equipment and inadequate maintenance as significant factors contributing to the recurring issue.
