NBC Issues Final Warning to Arise Television Over Bola Tinubu Chicago State University certificate.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has delivered a stern warning to Arise Television regarding the use of derogatory and incendiary remarks on its station. The warning, issued in a letter dated October 6, 2023, by the Commission’s Director-General, Dr. Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, has raised concerns about the content aired by the television network.

In the letter, which has been obtained by The Nation, the NBC urged Arise Television to implement a delay mechanism to prevent undesirable content from making it to the airwaves. The regulatory body also emphasized the station’s responsibility to ensure that its guests exercise restraint and maintain decorum during broadcasts.

Titled “Preponderance of derogatory and incendiary remarks: final warning,” the letter stated, “The NBC has observed with concern the preponderance of incendiary remarks allowed on Arise news.”

The Commission specifically pointed to a morning show program that aired on October 5th, anchored by Reuben Abati, Rufai Oseni, and Ayo Maio-Ese. The program featured guests Oladokun Hassan and Dele Farotimi and included unguarded incendiary remarks made by Dele Farotimi against various entities, including the Legislature, the Executive, the Judiciary, and Mr. Bola Tinubu, in relation to the Chicago State University Certificate Forgery controversy.

Arise TV was also accused of failing to uphold its responsibility during its “Newsday” program, which featured Kenneth Okonkwo, the spokesperson of the Labour Party, who used derogatory language on air.

The NBC’s letter explicitly cited multiple sections of the broadcasting code, including 1.10.3, 3.3.1(a), 3.3.3(c), 3.3.1(e), 5.3.3(b), and 5.5.6, and called on Arise TV to adhere to these regulations.

In response to these concerns, the NBC advised Arise TV to implement a delay mechanism to prevent the broadcast of undesirable content, as prescribed in section 5.5.6 of the broadcasting code.

This warning from the NBC comes in the midst of increased scrutiny of media content and broadcasting practices. It also follows recent reports of threats by supporters of Bola Tinubu, who have called for the removal of the Director-General of the NBC, raising concerns about the role of regulatory bodies in ensuring responsible journalism and ethical broadcasting in Nigeria.
