ECOWAS court orders reinstatement of Niger’s ousted Bazoum

In a related move, the ECOWAS Court of Justice, sitting in Abuja, issued a landmark ruling ordering Niger’s military government to reinstate President Bazoum, citing arbitrary detention. The judge, Gberi-Be Ouattara, emphasized the need for Bazoum’s immediate and unconditional release.

The court decision comes after Bazoum, detained at home since the coup in July, filed a lawsuit seeking his freedom on September 16. In November, the Nigerien military government sought to lift the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS through a court suit, but the request was denied in December.
