The Nigerian Senate has dismissed with fanfare the allegations made against them by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that senators plot how much they want to be earning in salary or get special perks from the Presidency.
These allegations, coming during a visit by members of the House of Representatives to Obasanjo, have been at the center of broad debate and public outrage.

In a strong-worded statement, the Senate Spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, representing Ekiti South, dismissed the allegations, describing them as “an attempt to crucify the legislature by the centurions of political hypocrisy.”
He clarified that no senator has so far received any financial patronage from the Presidency and declared the insinuation that National Assembly members fix salaries for themselves uncharitable and satanic.

He explained further that the constituency projects associated with legislators are usually recommended and nominated by senators, as obtained in other democracies. The Senate challenged any person with credible evidence to come forward and present facts to back their claims, insisting on denying the allegations.
The Senate explained further that the award of contracts for projects in any constituency is strictly an Executive function, which it does through its Ministries and agencies.
He assured the public that the 10th Assembly remained a “responsible and responsive chamber” that upholds the economic and developmental objectives of Nigeria in all sincerity. He said the Senate adheres strictly to the constitution and shall not seek any other privilege from other government branches.
