Nigerian Telecom Consumers Spend N3.33tn in 2022 as Telcos Reap Same Revenue; Data Usage Surges

In a testament to the growing reliance on telecommunications services in Nigeria, citizens and other consumers within the nation spent an astonishing N3.33 trillion on various telecom services, including calls, data, SMS, and more, throughout 2022.

This substantial expenditure coincided with a similar total revenue of N3.33 trillion generated by telecom companies (telcos) during the same period.

These figures were unveiled by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in its recently published ‘2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report.’

The report from the NCC highlighted a notable surge in active subscribers, with the number escalating from 195,463,898 subscriptions in 2021 to a robust 222,571,568 active voice subscriptions by December 2022. This marked an impressive year-on-year increase of 13.86 percent.

The NCC attributed this growth in active subscribers to a range of factors, including unwavering subscriber loyalty, strategically timed promotional campaigns, seasonal influences, robust consumer acquisition strategies, and fierce competition driving competitive product offerings across various networks.

Importantly, the report underlined how the surge in active subscriptions had a positive impact on key telecom indicators, notably teledensity, Internet penetration, and broadband penetration.

As more Nigerians engaged with telecom services, these indicators saw an encouraging rise, reflecting the increasing integration of digital communication into the nation’s fabric.

The data usage segment experienced substantial growth as well. Data consumption surged by an impressive 46.77 percent, totaling 518,381.78 terabytes (TB) by the end of 2022.

The NCC highlighted this development, stating, “The total volume of data consumed by subscribers increased to 518,381.78TB as of December 2022 from 353,118.89TB as of December 2021. This represents an increase of 46.77 percent in data consumption within the period.”

As Nigeria continues its digital transformation journey, the data signifies the growing importance of telecom services in both the daily lives of citizens and the broader economic landscape.

With consumers increasingly reliant on telecom offerings and data consumption experiencing robust growth, stakeholders in the industry are poised to adapt and innovate to meet the evolving demands of the Nigerian populace.
