Azaigba to Tinubu: “Reintroduce Subsidy Unless Nigerians Won’t Be Able to Breathe Again.

As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 64th Independence Day on October 1, Professor Kenneth Azaigba from the Federal University Dutse has urged President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the fuel subsidy to alleviate the growing economic burden on citizens.

In an interview on Sunday in Makurdi, the history professor stressed that reintroducing the subsidy could help resuscitate the struggling economy and reduce the harsh effects of current policies.

Azaigba noted that the removal of the fuel subsidy, signaled by Tinubu’s proclamation that “subsidy is gone,” has contributed to the naira’s depreciation and intensified the hardship facing ordinary Nigerians.

He argued that the problem lies not with the subsidy itself, but with its mismanagement, stating that no economy, especially one as fragile as Nigeria’s, can function effectively without some form of government intervention.

“We cannot run an economy like ours without subsidies. The subsidy management regime has to be looked at. Electricity tariffs and fuel prices are unreasonably high, and without mitigating these, we won’t be able to breathe in Nigeria again,” Azaigba remarked.

He called on the government to review its economic policies, emphasizing that they should be designed to not only stabilize the economy but also improve the standard of living for Nigerians.

The professor expressed alarm at the rapid devaluation of the naira, noting its detrimental impact on everyday life.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, Azaigba acknowledged some progress but lamented the country’s inability to fully leverage its abundant resources for economic growth.

He concluded by calling for innovative solutions to Nigeria’s current economic crisis and urged a more strategic approach to national development.
