Nigerians are not respected abroad due to the kind of ‘characters’ leading us, according to Peter Obi
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, claims that international communities are not respecting Nigeria because of the “characters” in power.
On Saturday, Mr Obi spoke about how Nigerians are mistreated in other countries in a Twitter space moderated by Parallel Fact.
“They cannot respect us where we are today; they cannot respect us because of the characters in charge of our country,” Mr Obi, a former Anambra governor, said. “All of us politicians have failed the country.”
Mr Obi said he had a similar experience where he was disrespected in another country for being a Nigerian, citing how independent journalist David Hundeyin was recently denied entry into Zimbabwe.

Mr Obi emphasised that for Nigerians to gain international respect, political leaders must be committed to good governance and citizen respect.
“All I’m saying is that this passport will be fantastic if we do the right thing.” To earn respect, you must first clean your house. If David is disrespected today, it is because he came from a system that does not even respect David,” Mr Obi explained.

“I’ve experienced the same disrespect. I’ll tell you. I’ve been to a country, and someone says I can’t trust you because you’re a Nigerian.”
Although Mr Obi did not specifically name any politician, his stance on the character of leaders comes as President Bola Tinubu remains embroiled in a drug trafficking-related case in the United States in the 1990s.
In their petitions to the presidential election tribunal, opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Mr Obi mentioned Mr Tinubu’s involvement in the drug trafficking ring.
