Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has strongly criticized the Nigerian government led by President Bola Tinubu, asserting that the nation is currently treading perilously on a “keg of gunpowder” due to poorly implemented policies or a complete lack of policies.

Speaking at the public presentation of the book titled, “Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa,” authored by former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment and ex-Minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga, Obasanjo expressed his concerns about Nigeria’s performance over the past 63 years. He remarked that the country has consistently fallen short of expectations, not only disappointing its own citizens but also Africa, the black race, and the global community.

While acknowledging Aganga’s efforts in identifying challenges and recommending solutions in his book, Obasanjo emphasized that acknowledging past failures is the initial step towards charting a new course for the nation.

He lamented that Nigeria’s decision-making has often been influenced by ego, emotions, selfishness, ethnic and religious biases, without a proper understanding of global affairs and the principles of development.

Obasanjo pointed out two intertwined factors crucial for all-round development – peace and security, which are unattainable without justice, equity, and inclusivity. He candidly admitted that Nigeria has faltered in these aspects over the past decade and a half, leading to various challenges such as banditry, Boko Haram insurgency, kidnapping, and other organized crimes.
The former president also highlighted the dire state of education in the country, with over 20 million children deprived of schooling. He stressed the grave consequences this educational deficit could have on the nation’s future.

Obasanjo warned that Nigeria is facing a dangerous situation, with increasing poverty resulting from poorly implemented or absent policies.
