Release Nnamdi Kanu now or face UN’s big hammer — Int’l lawyer, Fein writes Buhari

In a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bruce Fein, the international lawyer for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, urged him to abide by the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention’s opinion, which called for the IPOB Leader’s immediate and unconditional release.

In a letter dated January 6, Fein expressed shock that President Buhari had yet to act on the UN opinion, nearly six months after it had been presented to the Nigerian government, without first considering the severe repercussions of disobeying the opinion.

Dear, Mr. President Buhari.

“If you have any respect for God, you should immediately free Nnamdi Kanu from his prolonged illegal detention. If you don’t, you should be terrified of what will happen to you because God is just and his justice will one day awaken.

“On July 20, 2022, just over six months ago, the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations Human Rights Council published Opinion No. 25/2022.

It was unanimously determined that your government is holding Nnamdi Kanu against the law and in violation of sixteen (16) international law prescriptions known as jus cogens, which are rules of justice that apply to all countries equally. Section 105.

“The appropriate remedy would be for the Government of Nigeria to release Mr. Kanu immediately, and for both Nigeria and Kenya to grant him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations in accordance with international law,” the Working Group continued.

The Working Group requests that the Nigerian government act quickly to secure Mr. Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release.

He is still being held in solitary confinement by DSS. Mr. Kanu has, among other things, been denied essential medical treatment for a condition that could be life-threatening.

Since July 20, 2022, your government’s criminal detention of Mr. Kanu has reached new high points every single day, adding to the crimes associated with his initial kidnapping, torture, and extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

“If justice presided over Aso Rock instead of tyranny, your government would be the defendant and Mr. Kanu the prosecutor.

In a broader sense, the ongoing criminality of your government affects many people.

“Your administration has descended to genocide and crimes against humanity by destroying, traumatising, and terrorising the lives of seventy (70) million Biafrans because they exercised their inalienable right to seek, through peaceful means, self-determination.
