On Saturday, the human rights attorney claimed that Governor Ugwuanyi had turned into the deputy chief of staff to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, leaving the state’s citizens in the care of monstrous criminals.

According to Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has turned the state over to criminal gangs, cultists, and killers so they can terrorise the residents as they please.

Since Governor Ugwuanyi took office, Enugu State has recently turned into a battlefield for armed herdsmen and other heinous armed criminal elements, including cultists.

In many communities throughout the state, particularly in the Agu-Amede community in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, numerous and ongoing killings and property destruction by suspected Fulani herdsmen have been reported.

In one of their attacks in November, the killer-herdsmen reportedly killed no fewer than ten people and left a large number of others injured, forcing the locals to flee the area.

Over 14 local villages in the Agu-Amede and Mgbuji communities had reportedly been pillaged by armed Fulani herdsmen since the second quarter of 2021.

There were also reports of numerous deaths and the destruction of homes worth millions of naira.

In addition, numerous people, including children, had been abducted by the same armed herdsmen who launched their attacks from Benue State.

Augustine Odoh, a community leader, had told journalist that during all of the attacks, no government security had rescued them.

“They cannot be faced with bare hands by our people. With AK-47 rifles and other lethal weapons, they attack houses in large groups for hours on end without being confronted.

“The government will not send soldiers to our communities to stop herdsmen and Islamic terrorist attacks; instead, it will only send soldiers to communities in other South-East states to hunt down and kill members of pro-Biafra groups, particularly the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“That is the government’s hypocrisy. Soldiers and other security personnel are now viewed in my community as supporters and accomplices of the Islamic terrorists posing as herdsmen and attempting to conquer our lands.”

Attempts to contact the Enugu State Police Command for comment on the majority of these alleged attacks and killings have been unsuccessful because DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesman, does not answer his calls.

On Saturday morning, gunmen in Enugu State attacked and set a police patrol car on fire in the New Market area of the state capital while enforcing a supposedly five-day sit-at-home order issued by Finland-based Simon Ekpa.
