NYSC Drops Maiden Name Change Requirement for Married Female Corps Members
NYSC announces redeployment option for married female corps members.
In a landmark policy shift, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the removal of a long-standing requirement for married female corps members seeking redeployment. Effective immediately, changing a maiden name to that of a spouse is no longer necessary for concessional relocation.
This significant update was conveyed in a circular dated November 25, 2024, signed by Abubakar Mohammed, the Director of Corps Mobilization. The directive, titled “Review of Criteria for Concessional Deployment/Relocation for Married Female Corps Members,” was distributed to NYSC directors, state coordinators, and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) officials across Nigeria.
Corps Members Beaten by Teachers, NYSC Reacts
The policy revision aims to simplify the redeployment process for married corps members.
According to the circular, “The requirement to change a maiden name to that of a spouse has been eliminated.” This decision reflects the NYSC’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs and concerns of its members, particularly those juggling the demands of marriage during national service.
What Remains Unchanged
While the name-change requirement is no longer mandatory, other existing criteria for concessional redeployment remain intact. Married female corps members will still need to provide valid proof of marriage, including a marriage certificate, evidence of the husband’s residency, and a formal application.
Nationwide Implementation
To ensure compliance, state and FCT coordinators have been instructed to strictly adhere to the new guidelines. Area office directors will oversee monitoring and enforcement, ensuring the policy is uniformly implemented across all NYSC offices.
This change marks a progressive step in NYSC’s ongoing efforts to streamline administrative procedures and provide a more inclusive and responsive experience for corps members. For married female participants, this updated policy is expected to remove bureaucratic hurdles, making the redeployment process smoother and less stressful.
The NYSC remains committed to fostering a service environment that respects and accommodates the diverse circumstances of its members while upholding the program’s core objectives.
