Oborevwori Directs Immediate Payment of ₦77,000 Minimum Wage in Delta
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the payment of the new minimum wage to state workers, effective from October 2024. This was disclosed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, during a meeting on Wednesday with the leadership of the Organized Labour in Delta State.
The meeting, which included representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), focused on the implementation of the new wage.

According to Dr. Emu, the delay in payment was due to the wait for the National Income, Salaries, and Wages Commission to release the wage chart.
Now that the chart has been received, the committee has reviewed the consequential adjustments and cash flow implications. Despite these considerations, Governor Oborevwori has directed immediate payment, recognizing the economic struggles of the state’s workers.
“The Governor instructed that we proceed with payment because he is sensitive to the difficulties faced by the people and is committed to being a labour-friendly governor,” Emu said.

In response, NLC Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, praised the Governor for the swift approval of the new wage. He emphasized that Governor Oborevwori had honored his commitment to workers, making the implementation process smoother for the Labour movement.
“Some believed it was a political statement, but today, the Governor has shown that his promise was genuine. We are grateful for his leadership and the decision to proceed with the payment while adjustments are made where necessary,” Ofobruku stated.
Although the official statement from the state government did not specify the wage amount, sources revealed that the new minimum wage in Delta State will be N77,500, starting at the end of this month.
