Omoyele Sowore Released After Detention at Lagos Airport

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, was briefly detained by Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday.

The leader of the #RevolutionNow movement had just returned from a trip to the United States when the incident occurred.

 

Sowore, who had flown from Washington Dulles International Airport, arrived in Lagos around 9:43 AM WAT. Upon his arrival, immigration officials detained him and confiscated his passport, citing orders from higher authorities.

The incident drew attention as members of the Take It Back Movement and activists gathered at the airport to welcome him. After some time, Sowore was released, and his passport was returned.

 

In a statement on his official X account, he described the detention as part of a broader effort by the Nigerian government to clamp down on dissent. Despite the brief detention, Sowore was eventually allowed to leave, but he hinted at further actions planned for October 1 in opposition to government policies.

 

Sowore’s brief detention and subsequent release have sparked discussions about his continued activism and the Nigerian government’s response to dissent.
