Onyeka Onwenu dead at 72 in Lagos
Veteran Nigerian singer, song writer, actress, Onyeka Onwenu is dead.
Ms. Onwenu reportedly died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital, Lagos, after collapsing while performing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli.

An eyewitness who attended the event told TheNiche: “It is very, very sad. Onyeka Onwenu performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday just a while ago today, Tuesday, July 30, 2024. She slumped right after performing and was taken to Reddington Hospital, and she couldn’t make it.”
Born on January 31, 1952, Ms. Onwenu was a household name in music, politics, and activism in Nigeria. The Nigerian press had labeled her “The Elegant Stallion.” She had chaired the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture at one time. In 2013, she was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Among Ms. Onwenu’s numerous hit songs are “Wait for Me,” performed with Juju maestro King Sunny Ade.
As at the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from her family.
