Oscar Pistorius Granted Parole After 11 Years for Reeva Steenkamp Murder
Oscar Pistorius to be freed on parole in South Africa after killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Former Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius is set to be released on parole on 5 January 2024, almost 11 years after the tragic killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The athlete, widely known as the ‘Blade Runner,’ was convicted in 2015 for fatally shooting Steenkamp through a bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
Pistorius, now 37, asserted that he had mistaken Steenkamp for a burglar at their Pretoria home, leading to a sentence of 13 years and five months in prison by a South African court in 2016.

Additionally, therapy sessions are mandated, as revealed by the Steenkamp family’s spokesperson. During the parole hearing, Ms. Steenkamp’s mother expressed concerns about Pistorius’s purported “huge anger issues” and voiced apprehensions about the safety of women in contact with him.
June Steenkamp, while choosing not to attend the hearing, conveyed her exhaustion at facing Pistorius again. The statement mentioned the profound impact on her and her late husband, Barry, who passed away earlier this year. Despite doubts about Pistorius’s remorse, Mrs. Steenkamp disclosed forgiving him long ago, acknowledging the impossibility of clinging to anger for her survival.
This parole hearing marked Pistorius’s second attempt within a year. The initial bid faced setbacks in March, attributed to an incomplete detention period, a ruling later rectified by South Africa’s Constitutional Court.
Under South African law, consideration for parole is granted once an offender completes half of their total sentence. Reeva Steenkamp, a law graduate and successful model, was 29 at the time of her tragic death, leaving an indelible impact on global headlines.
