Illegal Mining: Oyo State Uncovers High Profile Individuals Behind Criminal Act
Ibadan, Oyo – In a significant move against illegal mining activities, the Oyo State Government has exposed a key suspect, leading to the suspension of the Onido of Ido land, Oba Gbolagade Muritala Babalola (Gbadewolu I). Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, underscored the government’s commitment to taking decisive action against lawbreakers, regardless of their status.
Addressing the media, Oyelade stated that the suspension of Oba Gbolagade Muritala Babalola serves as a stern warning to those engaged in criminal activities within the state. Intelligence reports linking the suspended monarch to illegal mining in the Ido local government area formed the basis for the government’s decision.

Quoting the commissioner, Punch reported, “In the light of our recent experience and the government’s daily efforts to rid our land of criminals, we are sending the signal to all like-minded elements to vacate our zone or be caught and brought to justice.” The government is resolute in its determination to cleanse the state of unlawful practices.
Regarding the fate of the suspended monarch, Oyelade asserted, “All options are on the table.” Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval of the suspension was announced through a letter dated February 2, 2024, signed by Commissioner Olusegun Olayiwola, with the suspension taking effect from February 1, 2024.

In a related development, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, revealed the challenges he faces in exposing high-profile individuals linked with illegal mining.
Alake disclosed receiving threats from influential figures but emphasized his commitment to unravelling the truth behind illegal mining activities. He also commented on the tragic explosion in Ibadan, indicating that investigations are underway to determine the cause and identify the culprits.
