PEPC Rejects Tinubu, APC’s Attempt to Halt APM’s Petition

  • The PEPC has rejected Tinubu and the APC’s attempt to halt the APM’s petition.
  • The APM will now have the opportunity to present its case to the court.
  • The court has not yet ruled on the merits of the APM’s petition.
  • The APM has requested a postponement of the hearing until June 26.

The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) has rejected an attempt by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to halt a petition from the Allied People’s Movement (APM) that challenged Tinubu’s eligibility in the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

Tinubu’s lawyers had argued that the Supreme Court had already addressed the issue raised in the APM’s petition in a previous case, and that the APM’s petition should therefore be dismissed. However, the PEPC disagreed, ruling that the APM should be given a fair hearing.

The APM’s lawyer, Gideon Ijiagbonya, said that he was pleased with the ruling, and that he would now request a postponement of the hearing until June 26 to allow him to secure a crucial document from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to support his case.

The PEPC’s ruling is a setback for Tinubu and the APC, but it is not necessarily the end of the road for their challenge. The APM will now have the opportunity to present its case to the court, and it remains to be seen whether the court will find in their favour.
