Peter Obi, LP Refused to Pay N1.5 Million to Access Election Documents – INEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) asserts that the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate Peter Obi have refused to pay the N1.5 million required to gain access to the requested documents.

This was disclosed by INEC’s attorney, Abubakar Mahmoud, during Wednesday’s session of the court hearing presidential election petitions.

Mahmoud was responding to claims made by LP’s attorney, Levy Uzoukwu, that the commission had refused to release documents requested as evidence in the lawsuit challenging the results of the presidential election of 2023.

Uzoukwu told the Harun Tsammani-led panel that INEC “refused stubbornly to produce 70 percent of the requested electoral documents.”

Uzoukwu specifically noted that documents pertaining to the elections in the states of Rivers and Sokoto were inaccessible.

For Sokoto State, INEC officials demanded a processing fee of N1.5 million, according to Uzoukwu.

INEC’s attorney stated, in response to the allegation, that Obi’s legal team declined to attend a meeting convened to streamline issues surrounding documents to be submitted to the court.
