Peterside Slams Akpabio’s Speech At Wigwe’s Funeral
Atedo Peterside, the founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, has expressed his disappointment over remarks made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the funeral of the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe.
The funeral, held in Rivers State to honor Mr. Wigwe, his wife, son, and others who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in the United States last month, became a platform for political discourse.
Taking to social media, Mr. Peterside criticized Mr. Akpabio’s comments, highlighting that the Senate President began his speech by expressing discontent over the reception given to former Anambra state governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, compared to himself.

Expressing his dismay, Mr. Peterside questioned the appropriateness of making such remarks and political jibes at a solemn occasion like a funeral.
Atedo Peterside wrote, “For the record, I was among those who found the Senate President’s comments at the Wigwe Family Funeral in PH to be in poor taste. He began by lamenting that @PeterObi received greater applause than he (Akpabio) got & later told us to join him in consoling the widow who was lying in one of the 3 caskets in front of him. Jokes? Political jibes at a solemn Combined Funeral? Methinks that was self-centred & totally insensitive.”
The funeral ceremony, held at the ancestral home of the Wigwe family in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, saw the bodies of the deceased laid to rest.
