Police Return To Seal Plateau State House Of Assembly

There was palpable tension at the Plateau State House of Assembly in the early hours of Wednesday after the Nigerian police re-sealed the building.

Gwottson Fom, a member of the state House of Assembly from the Jos South Constituency, condemned the actions of the police while confirming the event.

The development, according to Gwottson, prevented state legislators from reconvening for Wednesday’s plenary.

Gwottson, bemoaning the situation, stated, “We held our plenary yesterday (Tuesday) without a hitch, and we discussed important bills and passed motions for the benefit of our people. We planned to reconvene today (Wednesday) to continue our legislative duties, but the police barricaded the building.

“As legislators, we do not know what the issue is that will prompt the police to seal the state Assembly complex and prevent legislators from performing their duties. Therefore, we will hold a press conference to alert the world to the situation in Plateau State, where the police are attempting to eliminate democracy, he said.

The Plateau State House of Assembly has been under lock and key for approximately two months at the request of the police high command, whose personnel have been stationed daily at the Assembly complex.

In the meantime, the police explained that the Complex was sealed to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the wake of the Assembly’s leadership crisis.

Ayuba Abok, who represented the Jos East Constituency, and Yakubu Sanda, who represented the Pengana Constituency, were engaged in a legal dispute over the position of Assembly Speaker.

Alabo Alfred, spokesman for the state Police Command, was contacted about the latest barricade of the Assembly complex shortly after Tuesday’s plenary and stated, “The police will not be dragged into the politics of the state. Our duty is to maintain order at the state Assembly complex, and that is precisely what we are doing.”
