The e-CMR will serve as an advanced, real-time online motor vehicle database. It is expected to help investigations, operational actions of the police, and efforts against crimes linked with vehicles like terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. The digitization is, therefore, expected to fast-track documentation and verification of vehicle ownership and other related transactions.
Official Police Statement
The NPF, in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made available to the public details on the objectives and benefits accruable from this e-CMR initiative.
“As part of efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, NPM, Ph.D, in improving security of lives and property, the Nigeria Police Force rolled out plans to commence, within the next 14 days—that is, 29th July, 2024—the enforcement of Central Motor Registry now digitalized. This will rejuvenate and digitalize the system of motor vehicle registration and greatly improve the safety and security architecture of our country.”
It explained that the e-CMR system would further make services such as a change in ownership, change of license number, change of engine, and change of chassis/body seamless. It will validate the genuineness and ownership of vehicles, enhance the ability for the tracking and recoveries of stolen vehicles, and prevent the purchase of the stolen vehicles by innocent buyers.
Call for Public Cooperation
Notably, the Nigeria Police Force has solicited the understanding and corporation of all Nigerians and residents toward this initiative. In fact, it is committed to using available technology and fresh strategies to boost public security and national security. What was envisioned in relation to the enforcement of e-CMR is to have a safer environment for vehicle ownership and by large reduce cases of vehicle theft.
Requirements for Registration
To have a vehicle registered on the e-CMR portal, the owner will be required to have an internet-enabled device, either a personal computer or smartphone. These are the requirements for vehicle registration: vehicle license number, chassis number, and engine number. It allows payment from an ATM card.
