Ndukwe Onuoha, Nigerian Poet, Elected Councillor In UK
Onuoha ran for Derby City Council in the Mackworth and New Zealand ward on the Labour Party platform.
In November 2022, he was nominated by his party and became the only candidate of African descent to win.
Ndukwe, who moved to the UK two years ago as a Global Talent supported by the Art Council, thanked his supporters on Instagram in response to his win. “Many thanks to Mackworth and the New Zealand ward.” We created history.”
“It means that if you put yourself forward and want to be given a chance, anything is possible.” Furthermore, being the first African-American elected in Derby comes with a heavy burden of history, and I cannot afford to disappoint myself, the community, my heritage, or anyone else.
