2023 Presidential Election: Quick facts you should know

 

The long-awaited Nigerian presidential election will begin in less than twenty-four hours. To choose President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor, Nigerians will head to the polls.

 

As the world’s first major election of 2023, the election’s effects will be felt globally, as Nigeria continues to be Africa’s largest economy and most populous black nation.

18 Political Parties/Presidential candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that 18 political parties will participate in the election on February 25.

Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) are among them.

 

Registered Voters

The current voter register, according to the electoral body INEC, contains 93,469,008 voters.

 

Collected PVCs

INEC also disclosed that 87,209,007 PVCs had been collected by the time the exercise concluded on February 5.

Inference: more than 87,2 million voters would determine the fate of the 18 presidential candidates.

 

Uncollected PVCs

There were 6,259,229 unclaimed voter registration cards. These individuals are ineligible to vote in either the Presidential/National Assembly or Gubernatorial/State Assembly elections.

 

Polling Unit

There are 176,846 Polling Units in which elections will occur. Polling Unit is the smallest election-holding unit.

 

Registration Regions or Wards

Polling Units are dispersed throughout the nation in 8,809 wards. Also referred to as registration areas. A collection of Polling Units comprise a Registration Area/Ward.

Local Government Territory

There are 774 Registration Areas/Wards located at the local government level across the country.

 

Electoral Constituencies

In the United States, there are 1,491 Electoral Constituencies. These are the electoral districts that each member of the National/State Assemblies represents.

INEC is responsible for dividing the nation into electoral districts to facilitate representation in the National/State Assemblies.

 

Contestants

There will be 15,331 candidates participating in the elections on February 25 and March 11.
