Senate Reiterates 16 Years as Minimum Requirement for Tertiary Institution Admission in Nigeria
The Nigerian Senate has moved to clarify recent discussions surrounding the minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions in the country.
Amidst speculations and concerns raised by recent comments suggesting a possible increase in the minimum age requirement to 18 years, the Senate reassured Nigerians that the current age requirement of 16 years remains unchanged.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Adeyemi Adaramodu, emphasized that any adjustments to the age requirement would necessitate legislative action following due process.
In an interview with journalists, Adaramodu clarified that statements attributed to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, regarding a potential increase in the minimum age limit, were not legally binding but rather reflective of personal opinions.
Previously, the Minister of Education had hinted at plans to review and raise the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions to 18 years.
As discussions on this matter continue, the Senate’s reaffirmation of the existing minimum age requirement provides clarity and assurance to stakeholders in the education sector.
